Highlanders’ Unbeaten Streak Ends at 64

Columbus, OH—The Houghton College women’s soccer team saw its 64-game unbeaten streak in regular season play come to an end when Ohio Dominican University (ODU) shut them out 2-0 at the ODU Panther Classic here Friday evening.

Highlanders Coach David Lewis expressed disappointment at the end of his team’s streak, but felt that “They [ODU] were the better team.” He said that ODU had controlled play throughout the game. The statistics bear out that assessment: ODU lead Houghton in shots, 27-6.

ODU’s Jen Burgei scored her first goal of the season just over 5 minutes into the game on an assist from Kelsey Buck. The second goal came in the 73rd minute from Briana Coddington, with an assist from Julia Martin.

Becky Wakeman and Lauren Foster each played half the game in net for the Highlanders and each gave up one goal. Wakeman had eight saves and Foster had four.

The game was played in oppressive weather, with a heat index over 100 at the 5:00 p.m. kickoff, so officials deemed it necessary to allow each team a water break midway through each half.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
