Elmira, N.Y.- The Highlander field hockey team has taken some licks this year facing national powerhouses Bloomsburg and SUNY Cortland. It was just a matter of time before they turned the table on someone.

The team snapped a two game losing-streak by shutting out the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College, 2-0. Houghton took control of the game from the first whistle and controlled the ball, firing 25 shots to Elmira's one and leading in penalty corners 13-2.

Though the first half was scoreless much of the action was played within the Soaring Eagles' territory. The Highlanders applied the pressure, dishing out 17 shot.

Their first break came 10 minutes into the second half (45:53) with Amanda Brenon (Endwell, N.Y.)  collecting a loose ball in front of the goal and pushing it in from 3 yards out. The Highlanders struck again with Sarah Buckwalter (Lititz, Pa.) scoring her second goal of the season off a rebound from the far post with seven minutes left in play (63:35).

The Highlanders improve to 2-3 and Elmira falls to 1-3 for the season. The field hockey team will play again Saturday, September 15 at Seton Hill University in Pittsburg, Pa. at 2:00 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
