Houghton Men Remain Unbeaten
Nyack,
N.Y.— The Houghton College men’s soccer team remained unbeaten,
dominating St. Thomas Aquinas College (Sparkill, N.Y.) and winning 2-0
to open the Warrior Invitational tournament here Friday afternoon.
Houghton’s record is now 2-0-2.
Freshman
Johnny Kimani (pictured) opened the scoring at 24:58 on a breakaway. Dan
Brubacher received the assist for making the pass that sprung Kimani.
Bryan Gerlach notched the second goal, at 79:18 in the second half, to make it
2-0 Highlanders (see picture at left). Aaron Martin assisted on that goal; it was his second
assist of the season.
“We played very well defensively today” said Highlander
Head Coach Matt Webb, “Erik [Lefebvre, Houghton’s goalkeeper,] wasn’t
very busy.”
Lefebvre was credited with four saves in the game to
seven for St. Thomas’ Michael Chappas. Houghton outshot the Spartans
19-4 and had eight corner kicks to none for St. Thomas. The Highlanders
were also whistled for five offsides; St. Thomas Aquinas had none.
The Highlanders will conclude play at the Warrior
Invitational on Saturday when they take on the host team, Nyack College
at 1 p.m. Nyack defeated Concordia 1-0 on a last-minute goal Friday
evening to up its record to 1-2 on the season.
