Mercyhurst Downs Field Hockey 3-1

Houghton, N.Y.The Mercyhurst College Lakers scored three consecutive goals late in the first half to take control of an even match-up and defeat the Houghton College Highlanders in field hockey, 3-1.

The Lakers' Emily Warren scored twice, first in the 22nd minute off an in-the-box pass from teammate Courtney Monin, then on a blast past Highlander goalkeeper Ashley Farr in the 28th minute of play.

In between Warren's goals she got an assist, sending a penalty corner to Monin, who finished it in the 24th minute.

"We came out flat in the first half today," said Highlander Head Coach Darlene Wells.

Highlander Ashley Hoffman (above) had her second goal of the season, scoring off a well-timed pass through traffic by Amanda Brenon.

The Highlanders now head on the road to play Nazareth College on Thursday, September 20 at 7:00 pm. The Highlanders fall to 2-5 for the season while Mercyhurst improves to 3-5.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
