Volleyball Team Beats Carlow, But Falls to
Notre Dame
Houghton,
N.Y.- The Houghton women's volleyball team split a pair of
matches today in an AMC
North Division tri-match series, beating Carlow College 3-0 (30-16,
30-16, 30-20) and falling to Notre Dame College 3-0 (28-30, 23-30,
21-30).
The Highlanders gained their first win in AMC North
Division Conference play by beating the Carlow College Celtics.
Holly Motheral
recorded 13 kills for the match, she was joined by
Darby Emerson
(pictured at right) with nine kills and
Lenore
Basset with eight kills. Defensively
Stefanie Swanson had 14 digs,
Leah
Scott added four blocks and
Megan
Phipps tallied 29 assists.
Notre Dame
College (NDC) would be a different story. The Falcons
swiftly took control of the match, frustrating the Houghton offense
and keeping the defense on its heels.
Darby Emerson
continued to show a solid all-round effort recording 10 kills and 26
digs.
Lenore
Basset and
Holly Motheral
had nine kills each.
Megan
Phipps posted 30 assists, 10 digs and two blocks.
"We're
young," said Highlander Coach Nancy Cole. "Every day is another
step... by the mid-point of conference play, they'll have the
experience needed to make that next major leap."
The
Highlanders move to 8-11 overall, 1-2 in AMC North Division
Conference play. They are back in action September 25 on the road against AMC
North Division opponent Daemen College; game time is
7:00 pm.
