Houghton Women’s Soccer Team Rolls Again

Houghton, N.Y.—For the second straight game the Houghton College women’s soccer team scored eight goals and shut out its opponent—Saturday afternoon it was Carlow University that went down 8-0 at Burke Field.

Lauren Haggerty (Right) scored three goals, including two in the first 11 minutes, Amy-Kaye Mitchell added two and Hannah Swift had a goal and three assists for the Highlanders.

Haggerty opened the scoring at 8:32 when Swift took the ball to the end line about six yards to the right of the goal and then cut back a square pass that found Haggerty all alone in front of an empty net. Less than two minutes later the two teamed up again on what looked like an instant replay—Swift passing the ball back from the right end line and Haggerty knocking home the goal.

Swift assisted on her third straight goal at 18:22, this time from the left side of the net. Amy-Kaye Mitchell converted the nice pass for her third goal of the year. Less than five minutes later Swift got a goal of her own, her tenth of the season, on a pass from Rebecca Smith.

Lauren Haggerty got her third goal of the game at 25:00 when she won a loose ball near the top of the penalty area, drove towards the net and found the left corner. It was Haggerty’s fourth goal of the season.

Chelsea Adams followed that up at 37:27 when a ball from Kaylan Reynolds sent her on a breakaway and she scored from the right side of the goal.

Kaitlin Smith ended the first-half scoring at the 38:00 minute mark, converting a nice cross from Sarah Whipple off the right wing.

In the second half, Amy-Kaye Mitchell had the final tally on an assist from Kaylin Bull on the right side.

Becky Wakeman started in goal for the Highlanders and had three saves. Lauren Foster played the second half for Houghton without a save. Carlow University goalkeeper Allison Nolan faced 16 shots on goal.

The Houghton women, now 4-2-2, play again next Saturday at 3:00 p.m., when they host Notre Dame College at Burke Field.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
