Geneseo, N.Y.-
Ashley Hoffman (Webster N.Y./ Webster Thomas) scored
twice, including the game-winning goal in double
overtime, to seal a 2-1 victory for the Houghton
College field hockey team today.
The Highlanders
continue to show their toughness; they're now 2-0
this season in games that go into overtime.
Houghton got down in
the first half, allowing the SUNY Geneseo Blue
Knights to open up the scoring 18 minutes into play.
Blue Knight Michelle Milkovich received a stunning
pass through traffic from teammate Erin Zalewski to
put the home side ahead, 1-0. The score remained
unchanged going into halftime.
The Highlanders
got their first goal with five minutes left in the
game. Hoffman received a corner pass from Elizabeth
Mueller (Lancaster, Pa./ J.P. McCaskey) and slotted
the ball into the back of the box off a slap shot,
sending the game into overtime.
The action remained
even during the first overtime period of play, with
each team taking three shots.
Houghton controlled
possession in the second overtime, taking a 6-1
advantage in shots. Hoffman's game-winner came in
the 95th minute of play from teammate Arryn Prince's
(Severna Park, MD / Chesapeake) cross across the
goal box. Hoffman collected the cross for an easy
tap-in behind the goalkeeper. It was her
team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Knights had all
the statistics going their way, controlling
the shots (26-15) and penalty corners (16-11).
Highlander goalkeeper Ashley Farr (South Glens
Falls, NY/ South Glens Falls) collected 13 saves.
The Highlanders
improve to 3-7; SUNY Geneseo is now 3-6. Houghton
will be back in action September 29 at home against
NCAA Div. 2 opponent Seton Hill University. Game
time is set for 1 pm.
