Field Hockey  Team Extends Win Streak Beating Seton Hill 1-0

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y.- The Highlander field hockey team defeated NCAA. Div 2 opponent Seton Hill University Griffins 1-0  this afternoon. Ashley Hoffman (Webster N.Y./ Webster Thomas) scored her fifth goal of the season and second game-winning goal of the week to help the Highlanders improve to 4-7 on the season.

Houghton has had success against the Griffins in recent years defeating them on two occasions during the 2006 season.  Despite having lost several players from last year's team Coach Darlene Wells has put together a scrappy group of Highlanders that's still up to the task to win big games.

Houghton's only goal came ten minutes into the second half after an aggressive push by the Highlander offense. Senior Elizabeth  Mueller (Lancaster, PA/ J.P. McCaskey) froze the Griffin defense with a blast to the left side post, where teammate Ashley Hoffman was waiting to deflect the ball past the goalkeeper for the win.

The Highlanders had two other opportunities to score; one of a penalty stroke that was deflected by Griffin goalkeeper Meredith Benson and another goal that was disallowed for a foul made  on the play.

Highlander goalie Ashley Farr (South Glens Falls, NY/ South Glens Falls) recorded 11 saves in her shutout.

The Highlanders will be back on the road October 2 against NCAA Div. 3 opponent Wells College. Game time is  4:30 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
