Ramapo Runs Down  Highlanders Field Hockey, 5-4

Mahwah, N.J.- Five more minutes was all the Highlanders field hockey team needed to force their game into overtime with NCAA Div. III opponent Ramapo College. The Ramapo Roadrunners scored the winning goal off a penalty corner sealing Houghton's defeat, 5-4.

It was a high-powered offensive afternoon for both clubs and each team held nothing back, the Highlanders led in shots 17-13.

Ramapo took an early lead scoring in the first few minutes of the game to take a 1-0 lead. Houghton answered back with two goals of their own, the first from Sarah Buckwalter (Right) in the 13th minute of play (1-1). The second came in the 27th minute by Amanda Brenon off an assist by Jenny Huyett (1-2). Ramapo struck again for the game-tying goal shortly before the end of the first halfevening the score at 2-2.

The second half started the same way the first did. Highlander Ashley Hoffman netted her ninth goal of the season in the 43rd minute of play giving the Highlanders the early go ahead (3-2).

However, the rest of the half went Ramapo's way. The Roadrunners netted three penalty corner goals, at the 52nd, 53rd, and 64th minute marks in the second half. The Highlanders regained a little with Sarah Buckwalter scoring her forth goal of the season ofaElizabeth Mueller pass.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
