Houghton Men’s Soccer Team Gets Third Straight 1-0 Win

Canton, Oh.—For the third straight game Houghton College’s men’s soccer team won 1-0, Saturday afternoon over American Mideast Conference (AMC) opponent Malone College.

Steve Grudda got the goal about 30 minutes into the game, nodding in a cross from Jonathan Brooks that capped a nice progression up the right side of the field. It was Grudda’s third goal of the season and his second game-winner in the last three games.

Houghton had other opportunities in the first half, but could not convert. Malone’s goalkeeper stoned Luke Sanford on a breakaway before the half.

In the second half, Malone applied added pressure, sending three on the attack, but the Highlander’s defense got its third straight shutout and sixth of the year. “We were a little shaky at times” admitted Matthew Webb, Houghton’s head coach, “but we got the result.”

Webb singled out central defender Tyler Haggerty’s “good leadership” and noted that “he won a lot of balls in the air” to help Houghton improve to 7-2-3, 2-1 in the AMC. Malone is now 5-8-1, 1-2 in the conference.

Houghton puts its streak on the line against AMC rival Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester on Tuesday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
