Hoffman Strikes Again In OT, Beating SUNY Oswego 3-2

Box Score

Oswego, N.Y.- Winning games in overtime has become a strength for the Highlanders women's field hockey team. Houghton's Ashley Hoffman scored her second overtime goal of the season to beat the SUNY Oswego Lakers today, 3-2.

The Lakers scored first through the stickwork of Eileen O'Neil in the 18th minute of play. O'Neil recovered the rebound off a penalty corner and quickly put the ball in the back of the box.

Houghton struck back at the 25-minute mark, tying the game at 1-1. The Highlanders Sarah Buckwalter sent a quick pass through the middle to the streaking Ashley Hoffman for the first of her two goals of the afternoon.

Highlander Arryn Prince stretched the lead in the 50th minute of play off a penalty stroke, successfully finding the back of the box and putting the visitors ahead 2-1. This was short-lived as Laker Lori Teaney scored the game tying goal in the 53rd minutesending the game into overtime.

The Highlanders waited until the  eighth minute of overtime to finish SUNY Oswego. Ashley Hoffman struck a low line-drive from the left side, quickly passing Laker goal keeper Jamie Scharfe for her 11th goal of the season. The Highlanders improve to 6-8, SUNY Oswego falls to 2-13.

The Highlanders will be back in action at home October 26 against SUNY Morrisville. Game is scheduled for 4 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
