Highlander Women Break Through
in Second Half
Box Score

Houghton, N.Y.— The
Houghton College women’s soccer
team scored three times in the
first nine minutes of the second
half to break open a tight game
and cruise to a 6-0 victory over
Ursuline College at Burke Field.
The win guarantees the
Highlanders at least a tie for
the American Mideast Conference
(AMC) North Division title—their
14th conference or division
title in the past 15 years.
Rebecca Smith led the way for
the Highlanders, scoring twice
and assisting on a third while
dominating play in the midfield
from her stopper position.
Hannah Swift added a goal and
two assists. It was Houghton’s
seventh straight win, six of
them shutouts.
Smith scored the only goal of
the first half at 26:09 when she
took a square ball from Swift
and hit a one-hopper from the
top of the penalty area that
skidded past Ursuline goalkeeper
Steph Kasza.
Just 1:52 into the second half,
it was Andrea Duryea taking a
pass from Lauren Haggerty and
finding the top of the net on a
long floater to get the
Highlanders started. Two minutes
later, Smith struck again, with
another low drive that Kasza
couldn’t handle—this one from
about 25 yards out. Duryea got
the assist.
About three and half minutes
later Swift took a pass from
Smith, got knocked down near the
top of the penalty area,
scrambled to her feet and drove
a low, hard shot just inside the
right post to give Houghton a
4-0 lead.
It was Swift who set up Carolynn
Tomlinson at 61:00 by threading
a perfect pass through the
Arrows’ defense and onto
Tomlinson’s foot. Tomlinson took
one touch and then unleashed a
drive just inside the left post.
Amy-Kaye Mitchell closed out the
scoring at 73:08 when Mandy
Lewandowski hit a low, hard shot
from the left side towards the
right post. Kasza dove to her
left and punched the ball away,
but it went right to Mitchell
who was following the shot and
she drove it home to make the
final score 6-0.
Lauren Foster made two saves for
the Highlanders, who improved
their record to 9-2-2 overall
and 6-0 in the AMC. They will
host Cedarville University at
2:00 on Saturday, October 20 at
Burke Field.

Houghton College
has deep
and
solid
roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference
for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,
in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
