 Field Hockey Stretches #8 Mansfield In Overtime Falling 3-2

Mansfield, Pa.- Outnumbered and outgunned, the Houghton women's field hockey team stretched the NCAA  Div. II #8 ranked Mansfield University Mountaineers into overtime before falling, 3-2.

Mansfield overpowered the Highlanders offensively in the first half dishing out a stunning 17-1 shot advantage over Houghton. The Mountaineers pressure led to two first - half goals, the first by Keely Jarrett who banged in a shot off a rebound off Highlander goal keeper Ashley Farr in the third minute of play. The second goal came in the 30th minute when Mountaineer Ryanne Higgins returned a rebound from a scramble in front of the goalie (2-0).

Houghton's defense played a major role in the second half the Highlanders limited the Mountaineers to only five shots in the second half. Houghton made the most of the defensive stand by scoring two goals within a minute of each other midway through the second half. Houghton's Elizabeth Mueller scored twice, first in the 46th minute of play off a pass from teammate Jenny Huyett from the top of the circle. The second goal came in the 47th minute of play from a right-side blast.

Houghton ran out of steam during the overtime period. It was the Highlanders second extra period game in just three days. Mansfield's Carlyn Spangler scored the game-winning goal seven minutes into overtime to give Mansfield a 3-2 win.

Highlander goal keeper Ashley Farr recorded 15 saves on a busy afternoon.

The Highlanders fall to 6-9 for the season and will play again on the road at SUNY Morrisville October 20. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
