Box Score

Houghton, N.Y. -
Freshmen Sarah Buckwalter (Lititz, PA/ Lancaster Mennonite) scored three goals in the Highlander’s 6-2 field hockey win over the Morrisville State College Mustangs today.

Houghton overcame wet and slippery conditions, asserting its dominance on the offensive end by outshooting the visitors 25-3 and leading 19-1 in corners.

Buckwalter was first on the board for the Highlanders, scoring off a defensive rebound from Mustang goalkeeper Stephanie Smith (18:33).

Senior Elizabeth Mueller (Lancaster, PA/ J.P. McCaskey) collected two assists on the day, her first from a deflection by Houghton’s Jenny Huyett (Stevens, PA/ Garden Spot) in the 32nd minute to give Houghton a 2-0 halftime lead.

Buckwalter would add two more goals to open the second half, both coming from breakaways, in the 43rd and 47th minute of play, to extend the Highlanders lead to 4-0.

The Mustangs made the most of their few opportunities, breaking into the scoring column when Jennifer May finished a well-timed pass by teammate Lauren Bordonaro at 59:17.

Houghton fired back off Emily Leonard’s (Middleboro, MA / Middleboro) goal, delivered by Mueller for her second assist of the afternoon.

The Mustangs had one more goal, by Jennifer Caffarelli at 62:28.

The Highlanders closed out the scoring when Ashley Hoffman (Webster, NY/Webster) snapped in a wrist shot from the corner, assisted by Huyett.

“We never let up today,” said Highlander Head Coach Darlene Wells. “It’s something we have continued to improve upon all season and I was pleased with our effort today.”

The Highlanders improve to 8-9, with one game remaining in the regular season. They face NCAA Div. III opponent University of Scranton Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
