Azusa Pacific Ends Houghton Women’s Season

(Daytona Beach, Fla.)—The Houghton College women’s soccer team lost to Azusa Pacific University 3-0 in the second round at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ national tournament Thursday afternoon.

Azusa’s Theresa Broad scored all three goals in the first half for the win.

Broad’s first came less than seven minutes into the game when Highlander goalkeeper Lauren Foster came out but couldn’t collect a loose ball. Broad found it and slipped it into the net for the game winner.

Azusa added goals in the 30th and 42nd minutes to pad the lead to 3-0 by the half.

The second half was only marginally better for the Highlanders. They didn’t allow any goals, but they didn’t challenge the Cougars much, either, and the game ended 3-0.

Azusa Pacific outshot Houghton 20-0 for the game, and held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Foster made five saves.

The loss ends Houghton’s season at 13-3-3. All three losses came against nationally ranked opponents; two of them—Azusa and Lee—are among the dozen teams still contending for the national title.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
