Daemen Women Roll Past Houghton, 81-58

(Amherst, N.Y.)—The Houghton College women’s basketball team got behind early and couldn’t come back as it dropped a game at Daemen College Tuesday night, 81-58.

“It was basically settled in the first half,” said Houghton head coach Skip Lord, “They dominated us on the boards, plus we didn’t shoot well—and that’s a bad combination.”

Daemen led 44-27 at the half, and then cruised to the victory.

Ashley Dupler led the Highlanders with 14 points and nine rebounds. Shannon Daugherty had 8 points on four of five shooting in just 14 minutes of play for Houghton as well.

“We have to show more passion on the boards and shoot with more confidence,” said Lord. “Those were the two big things for us tonight.”

The loss drops Houghton to 6-7, 0-2 in the American Mideast Conference North Division. They play a non-conference game Thursday night when they host SUNY Canton at the Nielsen Center at 6 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
