Houghton Men Box Kangaroos

(Houghton, N.Y.)—The Houghton College men’s team had little trouble handling the SUNY Canton Kangaroos for the second time this season, 81-52, Thursday night at the Nielsen Center.

“It was one of those workmanlike games,” said Highlander coach Brad Zarges, “We had a good team effort tonight. I was pleased with the way that we distributed the ball.”

Canton was game early on, even leading 16-15 ten minutes into the game, but Houghton put on a 21-8 spurt to take a 12-point halftime lead.

“They were feisty early on,” Zarges said, “but I think that run kind of broke their spirit.”

The Highlanders pulled away during the second half, leading by as many as 32 (75-43).

Mada Abdelhamid had 20 points and 11 rebounds, shooting seven-of-12 from the field and six-of-10 from the line to lead the Highlanders. Yannick Anzuluni (#24 in picture at left) had 14 points and 11 rebounds; Devin Paige added 10 points.

Byron Jones had a game-high 21 points and Josh Wilson added 12 for the Kangaroos.

The win puts Houghton at 6-8 on the season with a road game at Notre Dame College coming Saturday at 4 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
