Houghton Men Drop Tough Road Game

(Pittsburgh, Pa.)—The Houghton College men’s basketball team dropped a road game to American Mideast Conference (AMC) North Division opponent Point Park University Friday night, 85-58.

The Pioneers used a full-court defense to create turnovers and run away from the Highlanders in the later part of the first half, stretching a 20-19 lead to a 47-30 halftime edge.

“We didn’t execute very well,” said Brad Zarges, Houghton’s head coach, “Every time we executed the press break we were fine, but too often we didn’t.”

In the second half the Pioneers continued to pull away, scoring the first five points after the break to stretch the lead to 22. The Highlanders never cut significantly into that lead.

They finished the game with 26 turnovers and gave up 16 offensive rebounds.

The loss drops Houghton to 7-12 overall and 0-5 in the AMC North. Point Park is 12-10 overall, 2-3 in the AMC North. The Highlanders host rival Roberts Wesleyan College on Tuesday night. Tip-off is at 8 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
