Highlanders Drop Decision to Bengals

(Buffalo, N.Y.)—The Houghton College men’s basketball team couldn’t keep up as the Buffalo State Bengals got 22 points off the fast break to run away with an 82-63 victory Tuesday night.

The Highlanders stayed with the Bengals in the early going, holding the lead (12-11) with 12:08 left in the first half. That’s when Buffalo State went on a 20-4 run to take a 15-point lead with five minutes to go before the break.

That proved to be the difference. Houghton made a run in the second half, cutting the Bengals’ lead to 10 (60-50) with 8:40 left in the game. The Bengals responded with a 17-7 run in the next four minutes to put the game away.

Mada Abdelhamid and Yannick Anzuluni once again led the way for the Highlanders. Abdelhamid had 21 points and 11 rebounds; Anzuluni added 19 and 10. Ben Kopp was the only other Highlander in double figures with 10. Ryan Shay had nine.

Jamar Gray had a game-high 33 points for the Bengals, shooting 14-18 from the field, including 2-3 from beyond the arc, and had four assists. His running mate at guard, James Tyndal, had 14 assists with only two turnovers and added five points.

The Highlanders’ record falls to 7-15. They return to conference play Friday night when they host Point Park University at the Nielsen Center at 8 p.m.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
