Malone Closes Out Highlanders

(Canton, Ohio)—The men’s basketball team’s season came to an end Saturday night at the hands of the Malone College Pioneers, 83-65.

Malone got out to an 18-point lead (29-11) in the first 15 minutes. Houghton couldn’t get its offense going, shooting 8-29 (28 percent) on the way to a 40-23 halftime deficit.

Early in the second half, Malone pulled away, leading 54-30 five minutes in. Houghton made one run, cutting the deficit to 75-61, but with only 2:37 left there wasn’t enough time and Malone coasted to the win.

In the last game of his Houghton career, senior forward Rimgaudas Valaitis scored 18 on 6-12 shooting (4-8 from beyond the arc) to lead the Highlanders. Mada Abdelhamid had 11 points and Ben Kopp scored 10, hitting 2-3 three-pointers and 4-4 from the line. Senior guard Jon Van Skiver had six points (2-7 from three-point range) in his last college contest.

Tyler Renner had 21 for Malone, and was helped out by Ben Carver with 19 and Andrew Weaver with 18. The Pioneers out-rebounded Houghton, 38-29.

The victory gives Malone the American Mideast Conference North Division title with a 20-8 overall record,

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
