October 30

Houghton 2, Juniata College 1 (2OT)

 

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – After a scoreless first overtime period, Natalie Wenger converted a Kelly Mazzeo pass into the game-winner for the Highlanders as they knocked off NCAA-III No.8 Juniata.

 

Juniata pulled ahead by one with a goal in the first half, but Mazzeo scored in dramatic fashion with just over three minutes left in the second half to put the game into overtime.

 

Laura Kline had a big game for the Highlanders, recording 15 saves in 94 minutes of action, while only allowing one goal.

 

The win brings the Highlanders’ record to 11-4 on the year, while Juniata falls to 14-3.

 

October 29

Houghton 1, Frostburg State 0 (OT)

 

FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Kelly Mazzeo scored off a pass from her sister Kristin in the sixth minute of the first overtime to give Houghton the 1-0 victory over host Frostburg State.

 

Highlander keeper Laura Kline recorded seven saves in 76 minutes of play, allowing no goals. Houghton finished the game with a 22-8 advantage in shots and a 15-4 lead in corners.

 

The victory brings the Highlanders’ record to 10-4 on the year.

 

October 26

Houghton 1, Rochester 0

 

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Kristin Mazzeo converted a penalty stroke with eight minutes left in the first overtime to give the Highlanders a thrilling 1-0 win over the University of Rochester on Tuesday.

 

Rochester had the majority of the scoring chances throughout the contest, outshooting Houghton, 16-5, and holding a 6-2 edge in penalty corners. However, Houghton keeper Laura Kline came through with 11 saves to record her fourth shutout of the season.

 

Houghton improved to 9-4 with the win.

 

October 21

Mercyhurst 3, Houghton 2

 

ERIE, Pa. – The Highlanders saw their eight-game winning streak broken Thursday night on the road, as they suffered a 3-2 loss at Mercyhurst College.

 

Kristin Mazzeo scored twice for the Highlanders, with Natalie Wenger getting credit with the assist on the second goal.

 

Laura Kline played the full 70 minutes for the Highlanders, making five saves and allowing three goals.  Houghton outshot their opponent, 12-9, for the game, while Mercyhurst held the advantage in corners, 8-4.

 

October 19

Houghton 2, Geneseo State 0

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Kelly Mazzeo scored a goal in each half to lead the Highlanders to a 2-0 victory over visiting Geneseo State, Tuesday night.

 

Mazzeo leads the team with eight goals on the year. Kerri Koch was credited with the assist on Mazzeo’s second goal. Laura Kline had a big night in goal, making 12 saves in 70 minutes of play. The Highlanders were outshot, 21-13.

 

The win was the eighth-straight for the Highlanders and brings their record to 8-3 overall on the year.

 

October 9

Houghton 4, Ithaca 1

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Kristin Mazzeo scored twice for the Highlanders, as they defeated Ithaca College, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon. Ithaca is currently ranked No.13 in NCAA Div. III.

 

It was the seventh-straight win for the Highlanders.

 

Stacy Garber and Kelly Mazzeo were credited with the other Highlander goals, while Laura Hanks and Kerri Koch netted an assist apiece. Kelly Mazzeo was also credited with two assists.

 

Laura Kline made seven saves and allowed one goal in 63 minutes. Erin Frederick made three saves in her seven minutes of action.

 

The win carries the Highlanders to a 7-3 record on the year.

 

October 8

Houghton 3, Oneonta 2 (2OT)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Stacy Garber scored unassisted with 10:51 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Highlanders the 3-2 victory over Oneonta State Friday afternoon.

 

Garber picked up a loose ball just outside the circle, moved around the keeper who had come out to challenge, and put a shot into the open cage, just inside the right post.

 

Kelly Mazzeo netted two goals on the game, the second coming with just over one minute left in regulation to force overtime. Kerri Koch and Isabel To were credited with Mazzeo's assists.

 

Laura Kline recorded five saves in net for the Highlanders, who outshot their opponent, 29-9, for the game, while holding a 16-9 advantage in penalty corners.

 

The win brings the Highlander's record to 6-3 overall.

 

October 2

Houghton 4, Seton Hill 1

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – After surrendering a goal to an opponent for the first time in four games, Houghton responded just one minute later with two goals 30 seconds apart, to pull ahead. Two second half goals sealed the 4-1 victory for the Highlanders over Seton Hill University Saturday afternoon.

 

Kelly Mazzeo scored unassisted just one minute after Seton Hill put their only goal of the game in the net. Natalie Wenger scored twice for the Highlanders, while Stacy Garber rounded out the scoring. Garber, Isabel To, and Kristin Mazzeo were all credited with assists.

 

Laura Kline recorded five saves for the Highlanders. The shots were 12-9 in favor of Houghton, and the Highlanders also held the advantage in corners, 7-2.

 

Houghton’s record is now 5-3 on the season.

 

October 1

Houghton 2, Slippery Rock University 0

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Highlanders recorded their fourth-straight shutout victory under the lights Friday night, as they defeated Slippery Rock University, 2-0.

 

Kristin Mazzeo was credited for two goals on the evening, both being assisted by her sister Kelly. Her first goal came with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half, while the second was with 20 minutes left in the second half.

 

Highlander keeper Laura Kline recorded five saves in 70 minutes of play, while Houghton outshot their opponent, 14-4, on the night and held a 10-1 advantage in corners.

 

The win brings the Highlanders’ record to 4-3 on the year.

 

September 21

Houghton 1, Nazareth 0

 

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Highlanders avenged an early-season home loss to Nazareth with a 1-0 win on the road Tuesday.

 

Senior Kerri Koch scored in the seventh minute and senior Laura Kline recorded six saves in goal for her first solo shutout of the year and the team’s third straight.

 

Nazareth held an 11-10 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corners.

 

September 18

Houghton 3, Oberlin 0

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Highlanders set the tone of the game early, scoring twice within the first seven minutes, and then cruised to a 3-0 victory over visiting Oberlin College.  

 

Scoring in the 5th and 7th minutes were Stacy Garber and Kristin Mazzeo, respectively.  Kelly Mazzeo was credited for both assists. The third goal of the match came just after halftime, when Natalie Wenger put one in from a Garber pass. 

 

Highlander goalkeepers Laura Kline and Erin Frederick played 35 minutes each and both were credited for two saves. Houghton, now 2-3 on the year, outshot Oberlin, 17-8, and held a 10-9 advantage in corners.

 

September 11

Houghton 3, Washington & Jefferson 0

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Highlander coach Briana Burghardt earned her first career victory Saturday, as her team defeated Washington & Jefferson, 3-0. Burghardt took over for former Highlander coach Donna Hornibrook prior to this season. The win takes Houghton to a 1-3 record on the season.

 

Natalie Wenger recorded two goals for the Highlanders, while Kelly Mazzeo chipped in with a goal.  Lindsay Musser and Stacy Garber were credited with assists.

 

Laura Kline and Erin Frederick split time in net for the Highlanders, picking up one and three saves, respectively, in the win. Houghton outshot their opponents 18-6, and held a 9-6 advantage in corners.

 

September 10

Cortland State 2, Houghton 1 (penalty strokes)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Kristin Mazzeo scored off an assist from her sister Kelly in the 31st minute to tie the game at 1-1, but after two scoreless overtime periods, Cortland State claimed the victory on penalty strokes.

 

Cortland hit 2 of 4 strokes, while Houghton managed 1 of 5.

 

Highlander keeper Laura Kline allowed one goal in 100 minutes of play.

 

September 4

Nazareth 1, Houghton 0 (penalty strokes)

 

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Despite dominating most of the game and holding a 47-10 advantage in shots on goal and a 26-3 advantage in corners, the Highlanders lost in penalty strokes Saturday afternoon.

 

Nazareth keeper Heather Sautter and Houghton keeper Laura Kline kept the score at 0-0 through two halves of play and two 15-minute overtimes. The Highlanders had numerous opportunities to score throughout the game, but could not find a way past Sautter.

 

The game then went into penalty strokes, with Nazareth hitting two of five and Houghton hitting only one of five. Kline recorded six saves for the Highlanders, who are now 0-2 on the season. 

 

September 1

Brockport 3, Houghton 1

 

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior Kelly Mazzeo picked up where she left on in 2003, but it was not enough to lead the Highlanders to a win, as they lost their season opener at Brockport, 3-1.

 

After Brockport jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 18 minutes, Mazzeo took a pass from sophomore Stacy Garber and scored her first of the year to pull the Highlanders to within one just two minutes before halftime. Mazzeo set a program single-season mark with 22 goals last year.

 

However, the Eagles added an insurance goal late in the second half to secure the win.

 

Senior keeper Laura Kline made seven saves in goal. Brockport outshot Houghton, 15-11, but the Highlanders had a 17-5 advantage in penalty corners.
