October 13

Rochester def. Houghton, 3-2

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Down by two early in the second half, the University of Rochester scored three-straight goals to get past Houghton, 3-2, in field hockey action Thursday.

Houghton was in control throughout the first half, scoring at the 31-minute mark on a tally by Stacy Garber and holding the Yellowjackets without a shot for the first 35 minutes. Senior Kelly Mazzeo picked up the assist on Garber’s goal, moving all alone into first place on the program’s all-time points list with 102.

Mazzeo wasn’t finished on the night, as she tallied her 42nd career goal and fifth of the season just two minutes into the second half. That score put her just two goals out of first place on the school’s career list.

The momentum seemed to shift, however, in favor of the Yellowjackets, as they scored just 42 seconds later to pull within one. Revay Wilson got the goal with Celinda Fletcher notching the assist. Rochester pulled even on an unassisted goal by Krista Butler in the 52nd minute, and Mary DiMatteo tallied the game-winner 11 minutes later. GENESEO, N.Y. – Senior Kelly Mazzeo scored twice, including the game-winner with just two minutes left in the second overtime, to lift the Highlanders to a 2-1 win at Geneseo in field hockey action Wednesday.

The Highlanders were in control most of the contest, holding a 33-15 advantage in shots, but as has been the case most of the season, struggled to put the ball in the net. Mazzeo finally broke through in the 44th minute off a pass from freshman Arryn Prince, but Geneseo responded 10 minutes later on a goal by Sarah Doster to even the score.

After a scoreless final 16 minutes of regulation and 18 minutes of two overtimes, Mazzeo put in her fourth of the year off a pass from her sister Kristen.

With four points on the afternoon Mazzeo moved into a tie for career points with Lori Sheetz (1989-92) with 101. She also now has 41 career goals and needs just three more to tie Sheetz for the No. 1 spot in that category.
