Daemen def. Houghton, 88-75

[Box score]

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Highlanders closed out their season with a 88-75 loss to conference rival Daemen at home Tuesday.

Houghton – rather Adam Griggs – came out of the gates on fire. The sophomore forward scored the Highlanders’ first 11 points, including three three pointers, in the first three-and-a-half minutes to give the home team an 11-8 lead and force Daemen into an early timeout. The rest of the half was back and forth with the Wildcats edging out to a 43-37 lead at the break. Griggs led all scorers with 15 first-half points.

Daemen stretched the lead to 12 midway through the second half, but Jon Van Skiver came off the bench to knock down three three-pointers over a 70-second stretch to pull Houghton within four (61-57). The Wildcats, though, quelled the rally with two quick baskets, slowly pushed the advantage to as many as 18, and held on down the stretch.

Griggs finished with a team-high 22 points, Anthony Haughton added 13 points and 11 assists, while Corky McMullen and Luke Mortenson finished with 10 points each.

Daemen shot 55 percent from the field for the game and outrebounded the Highlanders, 37-25.

Houghton def. Roberts Wesleyan, 92-89

[Box score]

N. CHILI, N.Y. – Anyone in the stands would have thought this one was over just six minutes into the second half as Roberts Wesleyan led Houghton by 18. But that’s why they play 40 minutes.

The Highlanders methodically battled back to knock off the Raiders, 92-89, in AMC North action Tuesday.

Houghton shot 52 percent from the field and hit 8-of-17 three pointers in the opening 20 minutes, but still trailed by seven at the break due to Roberts’ 65 percent field goal percentage and 17-9 rebound margin.

The Raiders stretched the lead to 68-50 at the 14-minute mark and looked to have things well in control, but Corky McMullen and Adam Griggs were not about to let this one slip away. The tandem combined for 21 points over the next six minutes to cut the margin back to four (76-72), and thanks to a Jon Van Skiver three pointer at the three-minute mark, the Highlanders had their first lead since early in the contest.

Down by one with 27 seconds left, Roberts’ leading scorer Alphonso Evans missed two key free throws that would have given the Raiders the lead. Anthony Haughton converted two charity tosses for Houghton to push the lead back to three, Evans redeemed himself with two free throws, but Haughton closed out the scoring with two more free throws with six seconds left. Roberts missed a three pointer at the buzzer.

The Highlanders torched the nets in the second half, converting 60 percent from the field, 67 percent from three-point range (8-of-12), and 100 percent from the free throw line (12-of-12), while holding Roberts to 41 percent from the field.

Six Highlanders reached double figures in scoring, led by Griggs’ career-high 32 points and six assists. Van Skiver came off the bench to score 14 points, hitting all four of his three-point attempts. Allen Goodman (10 rebounds), Luke Mortenson, and McMullen each scored 12 points, and Anthony Haughton tallied 10 points and tied a career-high with 10 assists.

The win improves the Highlanders to 4-19 overall and 1-11 in conference play. Roberts drops to 15-11 and 5-6.
