AMC Qualifier St. Vincent def. Houghton, 2-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Highlanders finished their season with a 2-0 loss to St. Vincent in a men’s soccer AMC Qualifying match at Burke Field.
Houghton struggled to muster much of an attack in the game and fell behind 1-0 in the first five minutes on a perfectly placed 20-yard direct kick by Dave Suski. Later in the half, the Highlander suffered another blow when sophomore Josiah Snelgrove received his second yellow card of the game, forcing the hosts to play a man down for the rest of the contest.
The remaining 10 Highlanders gave a valiant effort, but the Bearcats broke through with an insurance goal to put the game away in the 57th minute.
Houghton freshman keeper Erik Lefebvre made four saves in the loss. Bearcat keeper CJ Cameron made six saves, including two point-blank shots midway through the second half. St. Vincent had an 11-9 edge in shots.
Houghton finishes the season with a 7-11 record.

LATROBE, Pa. – It wasn’t the high-scoring performance the team had displayed in its previous three outings, but the Highlanders will take their hard-earned 1-0 victory over St. Vincent in AMC men’s soccer action Saturday.
Actually, the Highlanders didn’t even score versus the Bearcats, as the hosts knocked one past their own keeper midway through the first half.
Houghton keeper Erik Lefebvre earned his fourth shutout of the season.
These two teams will face off again Saturday, Nov. 5 in an AMC Qualifier at Houghton. Game time is yet to be determined.
Houghton def. Geneva, 5-1
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Rain and sloppy field conditions couldn’t slow the Highlander offensive attack, as they dominated play against Geneva for a 5-1 men’s soccer win Saturday.
Junior defender Ben Loos opened the scoring in the 13th minute, ripping a straight 25-yard shot high past the Golden Tornado keeper. Senior Andy Walton followed with his team-leading 10th goal of the year off an assist from his brother Ernie just six minutes later.
Houghton stretched the lead to three just over a minute into the second half when Walton headed in his second of the game. Senior Guillermo Jimenez followed with a goal in the 60th minute. Geneva got on the board on a goal by H.P. McCracken after a scramble in the box in the 75th minute, but Houghton regained the four-goal advantage just three minutes later when sophomore Tyler Cook sent a perfectly placed pass ahead to junior Pat King, who calmly slipped a low shot past the keeper.
Houghton held an 18-12 edge in shots, with freshman keeper Erik Lefebvre making five stops.
The Highlanders have clinched at least a second place finish in the AMC North standings. They now stand at 6-10 overall and 5-1 in the AMC North. Geneva falls to 6-7-1 and 2-3.
Houghton def. Point Park, 6-0
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Highlanders continued to stay alive for one of the top seeds in the upcoming conference playoffs, defeating Point Park, 6-0, in AMC North Division action.
Houghton is now 5-10 overall, but holds a 4-1 conference record with two AMC games remaining.
Senior Andy Walton and freshman Eric Emmons each scored twice to lead the Highlanders against the Pioneers. Junior Vince Wagner and sophomore Ernie Walton each had a goal and an assist, while senior Guillermo Jimenez and sophomore Tyler Cook tallied two assists apiece and freshman Jake Makin was credited with one helper.
Freshman Erik Lefebvre started in goal and made three saves in 65 minutes. Sophomore Dan Miller saw his first action of the year, making one stop in 25 minutes.
Houghton def. Seton Hill, 4-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Senior Andy Walton tallied two goals and an assist to lead the Highlanders to a key 4-0 AMC North Division men’s soccer victory over Seton Hill.
Early on, it looked as if it would be a long day for Houghton fans. The Griffins controlled the majority of play during the first 10 minutes as the Highlanders looked out of sync offensively and defensively.
But Walton scored his sixth goal of the year in the 12th minute to turn some of the momentum back toward the home team. The Griffins wouldn’t fold and continued to use their quickness down the flanks to try to get past the Highlanders defense, but each time they were turned away.
Houghton took control midway through the opening half when sophomore Ernie Walton poked a shot past the Seton Hill keeper as he was attempting to gather in the bouncing ball in the box. Sophomore Josiah Snelgrove and senior Guillermo Jimenez were credited with assists on the play.
Jimenez gave the Highlanders a 3-0 lead in the 38th minute, volleying a centering pass from Andy Walton past the Griffin keeper. And Walton closed the scoring in the 63rd minute on a spectacular individual effort, moving in an out of several Griffin defenders, before depositing a low shot inside the left post.
Keeper Erik Lefebvre made eight saves to get the shutout.
Mercyhurst def. Houghton, 1-0
ERIE, Pa. – Mercyhurst’s goal in the 26th minute was all the hosts would need in a 1-0 win over visiting Houghton in men’s soccer action on Wednesday.
Jason Pedra bent a corner kick into the upper-left corner of the goal for Mercyhurst, who outshot the Highlanders, 19-10, and had an 11-3 advantage in corners.
Erik Lefebvre made six saves in the loss for the 3-10 Highlanders.
Houghton def. Walsh, 2-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyler Cook made effective use of his minutes, coming off the bench to score twice in a three-minute span in the first half, as the Highlanders registered a 2-0 upset of Walsh University on Homecoming Saturday.
The Highlanders, coming off a big 2-1 win over rival Roberts Wesleyan earlier in the week, continued their strong play against the Cavaliers, who came into the game ranked No. 27 in the NAIA. Houghton controlled play early before finally breaking through on Cook’s goals in the 37th and 40th minutes. The first score came on a beautifully flicked header from five yards out. Tyler Haggerty perfectly placed the pass into the box. Cook’s second tally was a quick shot from the top of the box that slipped inside the right post and past the diving keeper. Andy Walton was credited with the assist.
Houghton also just missed on several chances in the second half, outshooting the Cavaliers, 10-5, on the afternoon.
Keeper Erik Lefebvre recorded his second-career shutout, making three saves.
Houghton improves to 3-9 with the win.
Houghton def. Roberts Wesleyan, 2-1
N. CHILI, N.Y. – The Highlanders avenged an earlier season overtime loss to Roberts Wesleyan, taking a 2-1 AMC North win over their long-time rivals.
Houghton fell behind on a Chris Farnsworth goal in the 16th minute, but Andy Walton evened the score at one with his fourth goal of the year in the 35th minute. Sophomore Josiah Snelgrove picked up the assist.
Snelgrove found Walton again just eight minutes into the second half, and the senior slipped a shot past Roberts’ keeper Jack Burgasser to give the Highlanders the lead. Roberts mounted a strong attack down the stretch, but the Highlander defense was up to the challenge.
Houghton keeper Erik Lefebvre made four saves to get the win. Burgasser had two stops for Roberts, who had a 13-8 shots advantage.
Tiffin def. Houghton, 2-1
TIFFIN, Ohio – Senior Andy Walton scored his third goal of the year to pull the Highlanders to within one midway through the second half, but Houghton was unable to find the equalizer in a 2-1 road loss to Tiffin.
Moe Karanouh scored both Dragon goals, the first on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute, and the second off an assist from Chad Smith in the 55th minute. Walton’s goal came off an assist from his brother Ernie in the 66th minute.
Houghton keeper Erik Lefebvre made five saves in the loss.
Tiffin outshot the Highlanders 14-8.
Houghton def. Daemen, 3-0
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Highlander men’s soccer team broke into the win column with a 3-0 AMC North Division win over Daemen College on Tuesday.
Freshman Josh Gottron opened the scoring with his first career goal in the 15th minute. Junior Vince Wagner notched the assist. Senior Andy Walton made it 2-0 just 11 minutes later off an assist from freshman Jake Makin and senior Guillermo Jimenez closed the scoring in the 85th minute on a direct kick.
Freshman keeper Erik Lefebvre made four saves to register the shutout as the Highlanders outshot the Wildcats, 19-6. Houghton is now 1-8 overall and 1-1 in the AMC. Daemen drops to 1-6 and 0-2.
#2 Rio Grande def. Houghton, 6-1
RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The University of Rio Grande Redmen proved why they undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, scoring six-straight goals to put the Highlanders away, 6-1.
The Redmen scored three times in the first half, with goals coming from Ben Callon and Guy Heywood (2). The second half saw Ryan Baxter score twice and Heywood tally his third of the game. Houghton’s Andy Walton kept the Highlanders from being shutout with a goal in the 85th minute.
Highlander keeper Erik Lefebvre made 10 saves. Houghton was outshot, 25-4.
Roberts Wesleyan def. Houghton, 3-2 (OT)
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton twice battled back from a goal deficit but couldn’t pull out the victory as Roberts Wesleyan escaped with a 3-2 overtime victory.
The Raiders’ Mark Howlett opened the scoring in the 15th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead that they would take into the intermission. The second half was controlled by the Highlanders, who had several scoring chances before finally breaking through in the 63rd minute. Guillermo Jimenez ripped a low 20-yard direct kick around the right side of the Raiders’ wall and just inside the post.
Roberts would regain their goal advantage in the 72nd minute on a goal by Yuuki Chartrand, but Jimenez got credit for the equalizer just five minutes later, heading in a corner kick served up by freshman Eric Emmons.
The teams played even through the remainder of regulation and early in the first overtime, but the Raiders upped their pressure late in overtime and tallied the winner off a loose ball in the goal mouth. Linos Sinkala poked the ball just inside the post in the 99th minute.
Houghton keeper Erik Lefebvre made four saves, while Roberts’ Jack Burgasser also stopped four shots.
Roberts held a slim advantage in total shots (13-12) and shots on goal (7-6).
Notre Dame def. Houghton, 5-1
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Highlanders opened their 2005 AMC North schedule with a 5-1 loss to Notre Dame of Ohio.
Play was even early on, with the Highlanders just missing on two scoring chances, but the Falcons gained control 15 minutes in and tallied their first goal in the 22nd minute. They added their second eight minutes later, taking a 2-0 lead into the break.
Notre Dame made it 3-0 at the 58th minute before Houghton’s Vince Wagner answered just 40 seconds later. Falcon goalkeeper Chris Logan chased down the ball into the corner of the field, but Highlander Guillermo Jimenez fought him off and found Wagner alone 30 yards from goal. Wagner calmly sent the ball over several Falcon defenders and into the open net.
Houghton wasn’t able to find many more offensive chances after that, and they couldn’t stop the Falcons, who scored twice in the final six minutes to put the game away.
The score could have been much more lopsided if not for the play of Highlander keeper Erik Lefebvre. The freshman made 10 saves, including a few diving stops and thwarting several one-on-one breakaways.
Notre Dame outshot the Highlanders, 27-5, including a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Gannon def. Houghton, 2-0
ERIE, Pa. – Houghton men’s soccer struggled on the road at Gannon, losing 2-0 to their NCAA Division II rival.
The win was Gannon’s first against the Highlanders since 1971 and their second victory all-time in 10 games against the Highlanders.
The Knights scored one goal in each half and outshot the Highlanders, 24-15, on the night.

Bethel (Ind.) def. Houghton, 2-1 (OT)
N. CHILI, N.Y. – The Highlanders remained winless after a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Bethel College on the second day of the Roberts Wesleyan Men’s Soccer Classic.
After Bethel opened the scoring 15:50 into the game, the Highlanders answered quickly. Vince Wagner scored his first goal of the year off an assist from Andy Walton just 54 seconds later.
The scored would remain tied until Bethel’s Hugo Gonzalez notched the winner just 30 seconds into overtime.
Highlander keeper Erik Lefebvre made four saves, while Bethel’s Matt Carrol stopped two shots.
Bethel had a 9-6 edge in shots and 3-1 advantage in corners.
No. 11 Virginia Intermont def. Houghton, 3-2
N. CHILI, N.Y. – The 11th ranked Cobras of Virginia Intermont held off the upset-minded Highlanders, 3-2, on the first day of the Roberts Wesleyan Men’s Soccer Classic.
The Cobras opened the scoring in the 15th minute, but the Highlanders responded twice in 11 minutes to grab a one-goal lead as intermission approached. Sophomore Tyler Cook scored his first of the season off an assist from sophomore Tyler Haggerty in the 30th minute and Haggerty got his own in the 41st minute, taking a pass from Kendal Stoltzfus. But the Cobras responded to pull even just three minutes later.
The game winner came in the 71st minute for Virginia Intermont.
Houghton keeper Erik Lefebvre stopped four shots. The Cobras outshot Houghton, 15-12, and corners were even at four a side.
Nyack def. Houghton, 4-1
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Highlanders fell to 0-2 on the young season, allowing two goals in each half of a 4-1 loss to Nyack College on the second day of the Houghton Men’s Soccer Classic.
Nate Rayl and Dan Corti scored for the Warriors in the opening 45 minutes and Robert Rice and Andrez Martinez added second half tallies. Houghton freshman Chris Cruikshank scored the lone Highlander goal on a penalty kick late in the contest.
Freshman Erik Lefebvre made five saves in goal. Nyack keeper Matt Andre stopped three shots.
Andy Walton, Chris Cruikshank, and Tyler Haggerty were named to the All-Tournament Team.
With the win, Nyack earned the tournament runner-up trophy. Cedarville, 1-0 winners over Roberts Wesleyan in Saturday’s other game, were named the tournament champions.
Cedarville def. Houghton, 2-0
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Cedarville University scored two second-half goals to send the Highlanders to a season-opening 2-0 loss in the opening round of the Houghton Men’s Soccer Classic.
The Highlanders were without four starters, including a key midfielder and two defenders, who were out with injuries. Cedarville finally broke through the Highlander defense with a goal by Josh Gelser in the 68th minute. Moments later, Houghton senior Andy Walton ripped a shot off the crossbar. The Yellowjackets put the Highlanders away with a goal by Jesse Fox in the 79th minute.
Freshman keeper Erik Lefebvre made seven saves in his debut. Yellowjacket keeper Luke Marietta stopped two Highlander shots.
Nyack tied Roberts Wesleyan 0-0 in the Friday’s other contest, but stayed in contention for the tournament title by winning a shootout, 6-5.
