MISSIONS-MINDED STUDENT-ATHLETES SWEEP COLLEGE-WIDE ESSAY
CONTEST
HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Three student-athletes took the top places in the
annual Houghton College Chamberlain Missionary Essay Contest held recently.
Sarah Bishop, a freshman women’s basketball player from East Aurora, N.Y.,
was awarded first place for her essay titled “More Than a Conqueror.” Carolyn
Cook, a sophomore cross country runner from Ashville, N.Y., took second place
for her essay, “Whose Responsibility?”, and Emily Munro, a senior cross country
runner from Westboro, Mass., was the third-place finisher for her essay,
“Cross-cultural Morality: Reflections and Analysis of Discipline in Maninka
Culture.”
The contest is an annual event sponsored by the Chamberlain Lecture Series
on Missions, which is sponsored by an endowment given by the parents of
Houghton president Dan Chamberlain. The series is designed to promote continued
interest and study of missions at Houghton: “to keep the challenge of missions
before the Houghton community in an interesting, compelling, and reflective
way…”
The essays were judged for originality, insight, cogency, and literary
style.
Ministry is the driving force of Houghton’s athletic department. Houghton
teams have been involved in short-term trips around the world, while its
coaches and athletes have participated in trips with a variety of sports
outreach organizations. Houghton sports ministry has also taken the form of
summer camps, coaches’ clinics, and local service projects. Athletics Director
Skip Lord was recently named director of sports ministry for Global Partners,
an outreach of The Wesleyan Church. Houghton alumni remain involved in
organizations such as Missionary Athletes International, Athletes in Action,
Ambassadors in Sport, among others.
