NELSON NAMED AMC NORTH PLAYER OF THE YEAR

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – A day after earning American Mideast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honors, Houghton College middle blocker Kirsten Nelson (Tokyo, Japan / Christian Academy) received even bigger news.

Nelson was named the AMC North Division Player of the Year for the third-straight year on Wednesday. She was joined on the AMC North First Team by senior setter Sarah Gunder (Northfield, Ohio / Chagrin Falls). Junior libero Lindsey Norberg (Waterford, Mich. / Oakland Christian) and sophomore middle hitter Emily Kuvshinikov (Edinboro, Pa. / General McLane) earned All-AMC North Honorable Mention honors.

The 5-foot-10 Nelson currently leads the AMC in kills per game (4.79) and is seventh in blocks per game (1.38). Her 0.288 attack percentage ranks 12th overall in the conference, but is third in the North Division. She is second on the team in digs with 326.

The 5-6 Gunder is eighth in the conference in assists per game (9.86) and is 13th in service aces per game (0.46). She was a second-team selection last year and earned honorable mention honors as a sophomore.

The 5-10 Kuvshinikov is second on the Highlanders with 212 kills.

The Highlanders (17-17 overall; 11-7 AMC North) are seeded fifth in the North Division for the AMC Tournament, November 12-13 at Daemen College. They play the South Division No. 6 seed Urbana University on Friday, Nov. 12 at noon.
