SEVEN ATHLETES
COMPETE AT INDOOR NATIONALS
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Seven members of the indoor track and field
team competed at the NAIA National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., March
3-5.
This was the first trip to nationals for two of the athletes - Audrey
Seldomridge (So.) and Jamie Mason (So.).
Houghton athletes broke two school records during the meet. The women's
4x800m relay team broke the school record by seven seconds. Mary Gibson (Jr.),
Kerri Koch (Sr.), Katy Sykes (Sr.), and Seldomridge ran a time of 9:40.44.
They finished 12th of 13 teams that qualified for the event. Koch bettered her
own school record in the mile by five seconds with a time of 5:12.50. Mary
Gibson competed in the finals of the 1000m and ran a 7th place time of 2:59.23,
while Mason jumped 16' 2.25" in the Long Jump and finished 26th. Ryan Fadden
(So.) competed in the 800m and finished 14th with a time of 1:57.09. Peter
Wheatley (Sr.) competed in three events; the Pentathlon, 55m High Hurdles, and
the Long Jump. He finished tied for 8th in the Pentathlon with a score of 3446
and 17th and 24th in the Long Jump and 55 Hurdles, respectively.
The athletes also had an opportunity to join in the Champions of Character
presentations being made to elementary-aged children in the Johnson City area.
The athletes presented concepts of teamwork to local third-graders.

in Western New York, is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics and
the American Mideast
Conference. Houghton has been named
a Champions of Character Institution for the past four years for its active
involvement in the NAIA’s Champions of Character Initiative, a program that
aims to teach the character values of respect, integrity, responsibility,
servant leadership,
and sportsmanship
through athletics.
