FORMER FILLMORE TRACK STANDOUT SIGNS WITH
HOUGHTON
HOUGHTON,
N.Y. –
Joe Mason (Fillmore, N.Y. /
Fillmore) has signed a national letter of intent to transfer from Alfred
State College and continue his track and field career at Houghton College,
Highlanders head coach Bob Smalley announced today.
Mason, who set Fillmore records in the discus
(145-11) and shot put (48-0.75) and was a two-time Expressway Conference All
Star, continued to excel at Alfred
State the past two years, where he earned all-region honors in both indoor
and outdoor track.
At Alfred State, Mason has set personal bests
of 14.67 meters in the indoor weight throw, 13.65 meters in the indoor shot,
39 meters in the discus, 14.01 meters in the outdoor shot, and 42 meters in
the hammer throw.
“It
is a pleasure to have recruited a local athlete of Joe Mason's caliber and
have him join us at
Houghton College. I expect Joe to come in and be a solid contributor for our
track and field program,” said Smalley. “He brings with him the potential to
break most of the existing throwing records in the shot put, weight throw,
hammer throw, and discus. I fully expect that he will be a regular qualifier
for NAIA indoor and outdoor nationals. Besides athletic ability, Joe seems to
be a solid team member and has demonstrated leadership skills, which I hope
will carry over into helping to build our throwing program.”
Mason is the son of Richard and
Darlene Mason of Fillmore.
