CUBA-RUSHFORD STUDENT RECEIVES CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER AWARD

HOUGHTON, N.Y. — John Chambers, a junior at Cuba-Rushford Central School, recently received the Allegany County Champions of Character Award from the Houghton College Athletic Department.

Chambers is captain of his Cross Country and Track team. His athletic accomplishments include recognition as an Allegany County All-Star in Cross Country and Track, Expressway Conference All-Star in Cross Country and Track,  Expressway Conference MVP in 2004, N.Y. State Cross Country qualifier in 2003 and 2004, and a N.Y. State scholar-athlete every year since 2002.

Teachers, coaches and his principle describe Chambers as “a stellar athlete, exceptional student, advocate for equality, natural leader, and an asset within the school community and beyond.” Well respected by his peers and coaches, Chambers “is a young man of high moral character. A true gentleman and is admired by all.”

Outside of the athletic realm Chambers serves as junior class president, is ranked in the top three of his class and is a member of the National Honor Society. At the awards program he received a plaque and was also awarded a $250 scholarship that he will receive at the conclusion of his senior year.

The Champions of Character Award program was established to recognize local athletes who demonstrate the five core character values of NAIA Champions of Character Initiative: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Additionally the student-athlete must be in good academic standing with an 85 percent average or above, a junior and a captain or anticipated to be a captain in their senior year.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
