CUBA-RUSHFORD
STUDENT RECEIVES CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER AWARD
HOUGHTON,
N.Y.
John Chambers, a junior at Cuba-Rushford Central School, recently received
the Allegany County Champions of Character Award from the Houghton College
Athletic Department.
Chambers is captain
of his Cross Country and Track team. His athletic accomplishments include
recognition as an Allegany County All-Star in
Cross Country and Track, Expressway Conference All-Star in Cross Country and
Track, Expressway Conference MVP in 2004, N.Y. State Cross Country qualifier
in 2003 and 2004, and a
N.Y.
State scholar-athlete every year since 2002.
Teachers, coaches and his principle describe
Chambers as a stellar athlete, exceptional student, advocate for equality,
natural leader, and an asset within the school community and beyond. Well
respected by his peers and coaches, Chambers is a young man of high moral
character. A true gentleman and is admired by all.
Outside of the athletic realm Chambers serves as
junior class president, is ranked in the top three of his class and is a
member of the National Honor Society. At the awards program he received a
plaque and was also awarded a $250 scholarship that he will receive at the
conclusion of his senior year.
The Champions of Character Award program was
established to recognize local athletes who demonstrate the five core
character values of NAIA Champions of Character Initiative: respect,
responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. Additionally
the student-athlete must be in good academic standing with an 85 percent
average or above, a junior and a captain or anticipated to be a captain in
their senior year.
Other nominees for the award included: Josh Ahmed,
from Bolivar-Richburg Central School; Samantha Dibble, from Andover Central
School; Brandi Duvall, from Fillmore Central School; Tara Ellison, from
Belfast Central School; Aaron Jackson, from Scio Central School; Jessica
Lord, from Houghton Academy; Amber Moore, from Whitesville Central School;
Emily Mountain, from Genesee Valley Central School; and Jessica Preston, from
Friendship Central School.
Houghton College

roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our
teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play
and
in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and
unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a

in the Northeast and
around
the world.
Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected
by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the
door
for Houghton to be a leader,
both in the Northeast and
nationally, in character education.
Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and
student-athletes
are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
