FIRST RECRUIT SIGNS WITH WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Leah French (Owego, N.Y. / Owego Free Academy) has signed a national letter of intent to play women’s basketball at Houghton College.

French, a 5-9 guard/forward, has scored more than 1,250 points in her four-year career at Owego. The three-time Southern Tier Athletic Conference Central Division All-Star is currently averaging 21 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and four steals per game. She averaged 18 points per game as a junior, 13 as a sophomore, and 11 as a freshman.

"Leah is a great fit for Houghton College in every way. She can play at least three different positions at this level. She shoots it well from the outside, but also has the athleticism and aggressiveness to drive to the basket,” said Houghton Coach Skip Lord. “She has been well-coached at the high school level, so she brings sound fundamentals. The strong NAIA AMC schedule will provide a good opportunity for her to become even better as a college player. Besides all the individual strengths she brings to our program, she is totally team-oriented. She will fit into the approach we take to the game very well."

She is the daughter of Tony and Renee French. She plans to major in psychology.

The Highlanders finished the season with a record of 7-19.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
