MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS HONORED BY CONFERENCE

Luke Mortenson Adam Griggs

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Two members of the Houghton College men’s basketball team have been honored by the American Mideast Conference for their play during the 2005-06 season.

Luke Mortenson (Greenville, N.Y. / Minisink Valley) was named to the AMC North Division Third Team, while Adam Griggs (Warsaw, Ind. / Warsaw) earned honorable mention honors.

Mortenson, a 6-4 junior guard, led the team in scoring (17.4 points per game) and steals (2.1) and was second in rebounding (5.1). He shot 46 percent from the field and converted 39.7 percent of his three-point attempts. He made a team-high 69 three-pointers on the season. Mortenson reached double figures in scoring in all but one game and went over the 30-point plateau three times, with a season-high of 37 versus rival Roberts Wesleyan.

Griggs, a 6-5 sophomore forward, was second on the team in scoring (16.1 points), was tied for third in rebounding (4.1) and was third in three-pointers made with 56. He scored more than 20 points on eight occasions and exceeded the 30-point plateau twice, with a career-high 32 at Roberts Wesleyan. Griggs hit a career-high seven three-pointers at St. Vincent.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
