MEN’S SOCCER SIGNS TWO MORE FOR 2006

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton College men’s soccer coach Matthew Webb has announced the addition of high school teammates Daniel Brubaker (right in photo) and Bryan Gerlach (left in photo) to his roster for 2006.

The two recruits attend Shippensburg High School in Shippensburg, Pa.

Brubaker was named Team MVP and earned Mid-Penn First Team honors and Public Opinion First Team honors last fall. He scored 13 goals and seven assists and helped guide Shippensburg to a 14-4-1 record and a division championship. Brubaker, who scored 31 goals and 17 assists in his four-year career, earned Mid-Penn Second Team honors and Public Opinion Second Team honors as a junior.

“I am very pleased to have Dan Brubaker join our program. Dan has a motor that just doesn't quit, and I expect him to come in and immediately compete for time in the midfield,” said Webb. “He is a very well-rounded player who could play just about anywhere, but I anticipate him being utilized in the midfield. Dan is also a very gifted student and will be a very nice fit for us on the field and in the classroom.”

He is the son of Wayne and Karyn Brubaker.

Gerlach earned Mid-Penn First Team honors in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and Public Opinion First Team honors in 2004 and 2005. As a junior, he scored 16 goals and nine assists and followed that with 10 goals and 12 assists last fall. Gerlach, who holds the Shippensburg records for most goals (4) and most assists (5) in a game, totaled 38 goals and 32 assists in his four-year career.

“Bryan is an excellent student, and his intelligence carries over to the soccer field. He understands the game and rarely makes mistakes,” said Webb. “With his work ethic and his understanding of the game, Bryan will provide much needed depth in the midfield. And his passion for his studies as well as his passion on the field will make for a good fit for our program.”

He is the son of Brad and Becky Gerlach.

Houghton finished the 2005 season with a record of 7-11, but had a 6-1 mark in the American Mideast Conference North Division, after going 7-2 in the final nine games of the regular season.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
