MEN'S BASKETBALL ADDS KOPP TO ROSTER

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Ben Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y. / Franklinville) has signed a national letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Houghton College, Highlander coach Brad Zarges announced today.

The 2005-2006 Big 30 Player of the Year and two-time Big 30 scoring champion, Kopp averaged 25 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists per game during his senior campaign and led the Big 30 with 72 three pointers. He was named Expressway Conference MVP following the season.

Kopp led the Big 30 in scoring as a junior, as well, when he averaged 27 points per game and hit 83 three pointers. Following that season, he was named Fifth Team All State, Big 30 First Team All-Star, Expressway Conference All-Star, and Honorable Mention All-Western New York. He was a Big 30 First Team selection and the Expressway Conference MVP as a sophomore and was a Second Team Expressway Conference selection as a freshman.

Kopp finished his career with 1,773 points and 259 three pointers, both Franklinville records. His points total also ranks him among the top 30 scorers in Western New York history.

“Ben is one of the finest shooters I have ever watched. His ability to shoot outside the arc and beyond is truly remarkable. However, he has also added much needed strength which in turn has allowed him to improve his skills off the dribble and to finish at the rim,” said Zarges. “Ben has played at a very high level in AAU competition, so his adjustment to college will be relatively quick. He is a perfect fit for our program and school and we look forward to seeing him continue his growth as a person and a player over the next four years.”

Kopp is the son of Tom and Laura Kopp. He anticipates majoring in business or physical education.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
