HOUGHTON FIELD HOCKEY SIGNS FIRST RECRUIT

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Ashley Hoffman (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) has signed a national letter of intent to play field hockey at Houghton College, Highlander coach Darlene Wells announced today.

Hoffman has been an active member of her high school’s varsity field hockey team for four years, having been named to the team as a freshman and having served as co-captain during her junior and senior seasons. She has garnered her share of awards and recognitions, being selected to the Monroe All County Second Team as a sophomore and to the All County First Team as a junior and senior. She received the Outstanding Defensive Player Award from the Syracuse University Field Hockey Camp in 2005.

Hoffman has also been active in her school’s softball program, serving as captain of her freshman team, co-captain of the junior varsity team as a sophomore, and a member of the varsity team as a junior and senior.

Aside from her outstanding achievements athletically, Hoffman has been honored twice as a Scholar Athlete by the Monroe County Athletic Association.

“I am excited to welcome Ashley to the team,” said Coach Wells. “During her time in high school, she has excelled in athletics, student leadership, academics, and in her spiritual life. I am confident that she will fit very nicely with our athletes. She has an outstanding work ethic and will provide some much needed speed to our defense.”

“Ashley is a special individual with a lot of talent and a great deal of heart for field hockey,” said Dana Tucker, Hoffman’s high school coach. “She is a dedicated, hard-working athlete that has a lot to offer Houghton.”

Hoffman is the daughter of Jim and Gwen Hoffman. She anticipates majoring in secondary education with a concentration in history.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
