LADY
HIGHLANDER BASKETBALL SIGNS FORLAND
HOUGHTON,
N.Y.
– Erika Forland (Huntington Station, N.Y. / Walt Whitman) has
signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at
Houghton College, Highlander coach Skip Lord announced today.
Forland has
come off an impressive senior run, averaging 11.4 points per
game. She holds four high school records, including most steals
in a single season with 66 and most blocks in a season with 71.
As a junior, Forland took the reigns as team captain and
continued to lead in that role as a senior. Forland has also
garnered her share of awards and recognitions. She was named to
the Suffolk County All-League and All-County teams her junior
and senior years, and has received several tournament all-star
team honors. She was named team MVP at the conclusion of her
senior season.
Aside from her
outstanding work on the court, Forland is a stand out in the
classroom. She has received the “Minds in Motion” academic
award during all four years of high school, and was recently
honored with the All-County academic award as a senior.
“Erika is an extremely versatile player who can defend any
position on the court,” said Dan Trebour, Forland’s high school
coach. “She can post up well but plays even better facing the
basket, slashing in the half court or running the floor in
transition. She is a great teammate and leader and made us a
better team on both ends of the court.”
“Erika is an outstanding player who can play any of the forward
or center positions,” said Coach Lord. “She has great speed and
agility and will help us to run the floor more effectively as a
team. She comes from a very successful high school program at
the AA level which is the biggest in New York, and she has also
played extensively in the AAU circuit. She is a leader on and
off the court. She comes from a wonderful family, is strong in
her faith and excels in the classroom. There is no doubt in my
mind that she will be a great addition to the program and to the
Houghton community.”
Forland is the daughter of Ruthann and David Forland. She
anticipates majoring in inclusive childhood education with a
concentration in special education.
