HIGHLANDER VOLLEYBALL ADDS TWO TO ROSTER FOR 2006

HOUGHTON, N.Y.Brianne Brubaker (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg Area) and Holly Motheral (Paris, Ont. / North Park Collegiate) have signed national letters of intent to play volleyball at Houghton College, Highlander coach Nancy Cole announced today.

Brubaker comes to Houghton after a stellar senior season, having helped to lead her team to a division co-championship.  She is a reliable player on the serving line, having retained a serving percentage above 95% for three years.  She totaled 697 assists during her senior season, bringing her career total to an impressive 1,404 assists.  At the end of the season, she was named to several all-star teams in her area, including the Public Opinion first team, the Sentinel first team, and the Mid-Penn second team.  She also received her team’s outstanding leadership award.

“We are very excited that Brianne is joining our volleyball team,” said Coach Cole.  “She will be a great fit with Houghton College and our program.  She brings much needed depth to our setting position and will play a crucial role because of her experience as a setter.”

Brubaker is the daughter of Wayne and Karyn Brubaker.  She anticipates majoring in intercultural studies.

Motheral arrives at Houghton after leading her team to an undefeated season and a county championship in the fall of 2005.  As an active leader and team captain, she was honored as North Park Collegiate’s senior girls’ volleyball MVP and senior female athlete of the year.  She also received MVP honors at both the Mohawk Invitational and Paris District High School tournaments, and helped to lead her team to second place and first place awards at those events, respectively.

“Holly will be an impact player as a freshman,” said Coach Cole.  “She is versatile, athletic, dominating at the net and also a strong back row player.  She will be one of the freshmen to watch in our conference this coming year.  I had the opportunity to coach Holly last summer for a week of camp and what impresses me most about Holly is her coachability, humility and work ethic.  I think Holly is a great fit with Houghton and our volleyball program.  We are so excited she will be playing here next year.”

Motheral is the daughter of James and Sandra Motheral.  She anticipates majoring in physical education.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
