HIGHLANDER MEN'S SOCCER SIGNS LUCKEY AND ROSS FOR 2006

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Tom Luckey (Houghton, N.Y. / Houghton Academy) and Steve Ross (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) have signed national letters of intent to play soccer at Houghton College, Highlander coach Matt Webb announced today.

Luckey was an active member of his high school’s varsity soccer team.  As a sophomore, he helped to lead the Panthers to a win in the Section V class D championship and a 15-1-2 record overall.  Luckey totaled 16 goals and 20 assists during his career.

“Tom is a welcome addition to the Highlander class of 2010,” said Coach Webb.  “Tom is a gifted athlete and with the proper training has potential to contribute at the college level.  Tom has grown up watching us play and now has the opportunity to be a member of our team.  Tom is a great fit for Houghton College.  I am pleased to add him to the squad.”

Luckey is the son of Peter and Nancy Luckey.

Ross comes to Houghton with four years of varsity experience under his belt, the latter two of which he served as team captain.  During his junior and senior seasons, he was named to the All-League first team for the Onondaga High School League.  He was also active on local club teams, playing with the Cayuga Lake Bankers until his sophomore year, and the Arsenal Academy team from his sophomore through senior years.

“Steve is going to be a very nice addition to our team,” said Coach Webb.  “As an attacking player, his quickness and tenacity will cause trouble for our opponents.  He will immediately be competing for time in the midfield and up front.  Steve is yet another strong addition in what is shaping up to be an excellent recruiting class.  Joining Bryan Gerlach and Jesse Woolsey, Steve has also been accepted into our Honors Program, evidence of his ability in the classroom.  Steve is a great fit for our men’s soccer program.”

Ross is the son of Bruce and Elaine Ross.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
