HIGHLANDER FIELD HOCKEY ADDS LANG FOR 2006

HOUGHTON, N.Y.Carissa “CJ” Lang (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford-Mendon) has signed a national letter of intent to play field hockey at Houghton College, Highlander coach Darlene Wells announced today.

Lang comes to Houghton after completing a stellar career with her high school’s field hockey team.  She served as co-captain of the team for two of her three years on the varsity roster.  As a senior, she finished the season with two goals and 13 assists in the midfield position.  She was recognized several times for her outstanding play, being named to the All-County first team as well as receiving the Mendon Coaches Award, Leadership and Coaching Award, and Sportsmanship Award at the conclusion of the season.

Lang was also recognized for her work in the classroom, being honored with the NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Award during her sophomore through senior years.

“Carissa has been a lead midfielder for both Mendon and the Rochester Blizzards,” said Margaret Smith-Lewis, Lang’s varsity coach and Blizzards coach.  “She has excellent individual field hockey skills, and she has the unique ability and willingness to play any position needed.  It has been a joy to coach CJ and see her develop as an athlete and young woman.  Mendon will miss her contributions and leadership in 2006, and Houghton will gain an accomplished person and player with great potential.”

“We are pleased to have CJ at Houghton College,” said Coach Wells.  “She has the talent, skills, and work ethic to be an outstanding college field hockey player.  We are looking forward to CJ stepping right into our center midfield position and freeing Kristen Mazzeo to go back to her natural position on the front line.”

Lang is the daughter of Mark and Kay Lang.  She anticipates majoring in physical education.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
