SKRYPNIK SIGNS WITH WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Lisa Skrypnik (Albion, N.Y. / Albion) has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Houghton College, Highlander coach Skip Lord announced today.

Skrypnik comes to Houghton after an impressive senior season in which she averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and four assists per game.  Her 892 career points and 319 career steals earned her honors in her high school’s record books as fifth all-time leading scorer and all-time leader in steals.  At the conclusion of the season, she was named to the All-Western New York third team and was hailed as one of the top defensive players and point guards in Section VI.

Skrypnik was also an active participant in Albion’s soccer and track programs.  As a junior, she received All-League honorable mention for soccer and was named All-League champion for track.  She currently holds the school record in the 400m, as well as the 4x100m, 4x400m, and 4x800m relays.

Academically, Skrypnik is a standout in the classroom, ranking in the top ten in her class.

“As a basketball player, Lisa is a dynamic player,” said Dave Carson, Skrypnik’s high school coach.  “At only 5’4”, Lisa is able to dominate a game defensively because of her ability to pressure the opponent’s point guard.  She is constantly forcing turnovers or not allowing the opponent to set up their offense.  On the offensive side of the ball, Lisa is a true point guard, passing first and scoring when needed.  She is an explosive and intelligent offensive talent who never stops working.

“As a person, Lisa is very special.  Her outstanding commitment to basketball and academics comes second to her faith and her family.  As her basketball and track coach, I have come to rely on Lisa to be the leader and set an example for others on the team to follow.”

“Lisa is one of the top point guards in western New York,” said Coach Lord.  “She comes from a very well-coached and highly successful high school program and has benefited from playing in an outstanding AAU program.  She knows what it means to work hard, both in the classroom and on the court.  She is a quality person who lives out her faith in very practical ways.  Lisa is a great fit for Houghton College and we look forward to having her in our program.”

Skrypnik is the daughter of Walter and Diane Skrypnik.  She anticipates majoring in business administration with a concentration in sports management.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
