WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ADD’S SMITH TO ROSTER

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Jessica Smith (Middleport, N.Y. / Royalton Hartland) has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Houghton College, Highlander coach Skip Lord announced today.

Smith brings a firm inside presence into the post for the Highlanders. Averaging 20 point, 17 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 blocks, 4 assists per game her senior year. Her 263 career blocks, 839 career rebounds and 1,151 career points earned her honors in her high school’s record books as second all-time leading scorer. In addition she holds records for most points scored in one game: 40, most blocks in one season: 61, and most rebounds in one game: 28. At the conclusion of the season, she was named to the 1st team all league as a junior and senior, Western New York Sportsmanship award, Niagara Gazette 1st team all area and Lockport Union Sun and Journal Player of the Year.

“Jessica will be an outstanding addition to our program,” says Coach Lord.  “She is a true post player who excels with her back to the basket.  She will provide a dimension that has been missing in our program for the last couple years.  Having a person of her ability in the post will obviously give us a stronger inside game, but it will also make us better on the perimeter since teams will have to double her and that will open up other people.  Jessica is a good student and is well-liked by everyone. We will enjoy having her in our program.”

Smith is the daughter of James and Mary Smith.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
