Men’s Basketball Rounds Out Recruiting Class For 2006-07

HOUGHTON, N.Y. Highlanders Coach Brad Zarges announces the signing of four more recruit’s for the Men’s Basketball team today.

Yannick Anzuluni (Ottawa, Ontario/ Garneau) is a 6’7” 180 lb G/F  that averaged 19.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, 9.2 assists his senior year at Garneau High School. Anzuluni is an explosive player with great leaping ability who will add athleticism to the Highlanders this season.

He is an exceptional scorer from the outside averaging 48.8% from three, and 52.2% from the field.

“Yannick is a slender, athletic, and versatile player. He can handle the ball as a perimeter, shoots it well from the arc, and has the ability to finish at the basket,” says Coach Zarges.  “His explosiveness brings an exciting element to the team. He also has a fun-loving personality and a love for the Lord.”

Anzuluni anticipates majoring in Political Science/ International Studies.

Martin Axnick (Rahden, Germany/ Hosanna High) is a 6’5” 210lb G/F junior transfer from Clackamas Community College. Axnick averaged 6.2 points, 3.8 rebounds per game last season. He is a big wing that can rebound at both ends of the floor. Axnick is entering his fifth year in the United States and has made the adjustment from the European game to the American style of play.

Academically Axnick is superb in the classroom and was selected to the “2006 NWAACC Sophomore All-Academic Team.”

“Martin brings great experience and tenacity,” says Coach Zarges. “He can be a scorer when needed, but seems to thrive when challenged to defend and rebound. While he is only 6'5, he has shown the ability to defend much bigger players and can rebound the ball on both ends of the floor.”

Axnick anticipates majoring in Business Administration.

Scott Macbeth (Clarence, N.Y./ Clarence) is a 6’ 1” 180lb versatile guard that will fit into the Highlanders rotation nicely. Macbeth’s strong senior year was evidence of his strong work ethic and attitude for the game.

“Scott is a late bloomer and bloom he has,” said Coach Zarges. “With several 30 point games against the top competition in Buffalo, Scott is starting to realize his potential. Scott can score off the dribble and knock down perimeter jump shots. He is smart on and off the floor and brings a lot of maturity.”

Ahmed ‘Mada’ Abdelhamid (Auckland, New Zealand/ Avondale) is a 6’6” 240lb C. Abdelhamid brings to the table the ability to rebound and score inside which will make him an intimidating inside presence for the Highlanders this season. Mada averaged 31.2 points, 20 rebounds, 7.6 assists, 3.8 blocks, 2.1 steals per game his senior year leading Avondale to a third placing at the New Zealand National Boys Basketball High School Championships.

For that season, he was selected into the National High School Tournament Team and invited into the All New Zealand High Performance Camp which catered the top 30 Jr. National talent’s in New Zealand. Mada has also been selected to the New Zealand Jr. National Age Group teams for the past four years competing on the international level.

“Ahmed ("Mada") is a post player with good feet and touch inside,” says Coach Zarges. “He is physically strong for a freshman and is not afraid of contact. He has been developing his mid-range game to complement his interior play. Mada adds much needed size to our front line.”

Abdelhamid anticipates majoring in Business Administration
