Rio Grande Beats Houghton in Season Opener

Houghton, N.Y. - NAIA No. 4 Rio Grande entered the game with an impressive unbeaten conference winning streak of 107 games. That streak was kept intact as they used their superior speed and strength to overcome the Highlanders. The Redmen started the scoring early in the game with a goal after the first minute off an own goal from the Highlanders.

Rio’s sophomore Chris Skarrat notched his first goal of the season, giving the Redmen a 2-0 lead. Senior Conar Dawson was credited with an assist on the play. Dawson would later score a goal.

The Redmen would take the 2-0 advantage to halftime.

Junior forward Guy Heywood got into the act in the 54th minute to push the Rio lead to 3-0.

Two minutes later, Rio Grande went up 4-0 on the scoreboard as Dawson scored a goal with Heywood notching the assist.

Senior Jacob Talcott closed out the scoring for the Redmen with a goal in the 80th minute. Brown assisted on the final tally of the day.

Final Score 0-5

The Highlanders next game is away on August 28th, against Roberts Wesleyan College at 7pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
