Rio Grande Beats Houghton in Season Opener
Houghton, N.Y. - NAIA No. 4 Rio Grande entered
the game with an impressive unbeaten conference winning streak of 107
games. That streak was kept intact as they used their superior speed and
strength to overcome the Highlanders. The Redmen started the scoring
early in the game with a goal after the first minute off an own goal
from the Highlanders.
Rio’s sophomore Chris Skarrat notched his first goal of the season,
giving the Redmen a 2-0 lead. Senior Conar Dawson was credited with an
assist on the play. Dawson would later score a goal.
The Redmen would take the 2-0 advantage to halftime.
Junior forward Guy Heywood got into the act in the 54th minute to push
the Rio lead to 3-0.
Two minutes later, Rio Grande went up 4-0 on the scoreboard as Dawson
scored a goal with Heywood notching the assist.
Senior Jacob Talcott closed out the scoring for the Redmen with a goal
in the 80th minute. Brown assisted on the final tally of the day.
Final Score 0-5
The Highlanders next game is away on August 28th, against Roberts
Wesleyan College at 7pm.
