                     Messiah Defeats Houghton College 3-1

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y- The Highlanders showed a gutsy effort against the defending NCAA Div. 3 National Champions Messiah College losing 3-1. The Highlanders competed tenaciously against the defending champions.

Messiah College opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of play with a goal from Patrick Lenehan, assisted by Kai Kasiguran. The second goal came in the 27th minute from a penalty kick scored by Kai Kasiguran. Kasiguran was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2005 NCAA Div. 3 National Championships.

The Highlanders struck back with a quick substitution from Coach Webb, putting Fr. Jesse Woolsey (Houghton, N.Y) for the first goal of the season for the Highlanders in the 65th minute, assisted by Jr. Josiah Snelgrove (Coldstream, New Brunswick). Woolsey reinvigorated his team with that goal for the remaining of the game.

Messiah closed out the scoring with a goal from Mike Rinker in the 68th minute, assisted from Dan Wagner.

“We created great opportunities for ourselves in this game, playing this type of competition gives our guys some credible feedback on how good we are as a team,” say Highlander Coach Webb. “We felt we didn’t finish some plays like we wanted to, but it shows we can play with the best.”

The Highlanders record is now 0-3 for the season with their next game tomorrow at home against Judson College, IL at 4pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
