Field Hockey Takes Down Nazareth College, 2-0
Box
Score
Houghton, N.Y.
- The Houghton
Highlander Field Hockey team won their 4th game of the season 2-0
against NCAA Div. III opponent Nazareth College Golden Flyer’s today.
The
Highlanders started the first half slowly, with few shots taken by either side.
Much of the 1st half play stayed in the middle of the field making it
an evenly matched half. But the second half was a different story.
The
Golden Flyer’s seemed unable to find its offensive rhythm today; with only a few
strong counter-attacks. They were unable to find any gaps in the Highlander
defense.
The
Highlanders increased the pressure on the Golden Flyer’s defense for the entire
second half creating opportunities from penalty corners being awarded. Houghton
received 21 penalty corners for the game, compared to Nazareth’s 2. This
pressure and some scrappy play in the box led to both goals scored today.
Sr. Natalie
Wenger (Annville,
PA) struck first
with her second goal of the season squeezing the ball around the Golden Flyer’s
keeper in the 53rd minute of play. The assist was from
So. Amanda Brenon (Endwell, N.Y.) who
quickly flicked the ball to Wenger while she was standing in front of the goal
contested by three Golden Flyer’s defenders. Stacy
Garber (Lebanon, PA) scored her fifth goal in five games on the 58th
minute mark. Garber pounced upon a rebound sent out by the Flyer’s defense and
quickly sent it back, barely crossing the goal line before the defense tried to
recover.
The
Highlanders recorded 25 shots on goal to the Golden Flyer’s 5.
The
Highlanders record now moves to 4-1 for the season, their next game will be
September 23rd, away against Seton Hill at 2:00pm
