Finish 3rd at 2006 Highlander Invitational
Houghton, N.Y.- The Houghton Cross
Country program hosted the 2nd Annual Highlander Invitational on the
college’s Field of Dreams on Saturday. As has become the norm this season the
day was cloudy and wet, torrential rains the night before the created a muddy
and soft course for the days races.
The
Women’s race featured the Ithaca College Bombers the 7th ranked team in the NCAA
Division III poll, and the # 25 ranked Roberts Wesleyan Women in the NAIA. The
Men’s raced also feature the Ithaca College Bombers who are ranked on the top 30
teams in the NCAA Division III, and the # 24 Ranked Roberts Wesleyan College in
the NAIA.
The women’s race went off
first with the Houghton Women the first runners out on the rain soaked course.
The women were lead by 5th year senior
Mary Gibson, (Grosse Pointe, MI) in 19:49 in 5th place, followed by first
year runner Kaity Fadden (Highland Park, NY)
in 19:59 for a 7th place finish. Both women ran excellent races
given the conditions of the meet. These women were followed by Junior
Rachel Rhodes (Salamanca, NY) in 21:09 (PR) for 19th place,
next was Junior Irene Vickner (Brockport, NY)
finishing in 21:28 for 30th place. Followed by the main pack of
Houghton Women , Lydia Throneblade (Castelton, VT)
in 22:18 and first year runner Junior
Heather Hutton (Canada) had a great result
in 22:20.
The women’s team finished the
race in 3rd place out of 7 complete teams, and showed good improvement from last
weeks opening meet. A really great finish given the two highly ranked women’s
teams in the race.
The Men’s race also featured
two top ranked teams, and the Houghton Men did not disappoint in their
performance. The men’s team ran aggressively from the start, using pack running
to attempt the upset of the two visiting top 25 teams. The men followed the
lasts weeks’ example and practiced their “pack-running” techniques and ran the
first three miles of the race as one unit. The men were lead by Sophomore
Dan Ballard (Syracuse, NY) in 4th place in a time of 26:51,
followed closely by Sophomore Chad Stauring (Arkport,
NY) in time of 27:21 in 9th place, he was followed by Freshmen
Landry Jarvis (Canada) who had a great
race to finish who finished in 13th place with a time of 27:30 (PR).
Junior Mike Platt (Wayne, NJ) turned in a
good performance to finish in 17th with a time of 27:51, captain Ryan
Fadden (Highland Park, NY) rounded out the Highlander scoring in 19th
place with a time of 27:53. The next pack of Houghton harriers was not far
behind second year runner Aaron Williams,
(Fulton, NY) in 26th place with a time of 28:25, he was
followed by Sophomore Jacob Connor (Orchard Park,
NY), in 28:38, Joe Campagna (Syracuse, NY)
followed Williams across the line in 28:59. Senior

in 31:12.

women’s lead in finishing 3rd out of 7 teams and also showed good growth towards
becoming a contender in the region.

for the Kingdom
on campus, in Allegany County,

Through hands-on,
innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and

are working together to change the culture of sport and
to change our culture through sport.
