                 Highlander’s defeat Roberts Wesleyan, 3-0

Box Score

Rochester, N.Y. The Houghton Highlanders faced an uphill battle against unbeaten AMC North Division leader Roberts Wesleyan College Red Raider’s on their home tonight. The Highlanders swiftly took care of the Red Raider’s 3-0, (31-29, 30-23, 30-26) who where 4-0 in conference play before tonight’s match up.

The Highlander’s entered the game without Second Team All AMC North Division Sr. Audrey Seldomridge (Landisville, PA) due to a pulled muscle injury. This made the challenge even greater for the Highlander’s. Coach Cole said “This was a big opportunity for our freshmen to step up to the challenge and they did not disappoint.”

Fr. Ashley Kuvshinikov (Edinboro, PA) & Fr. Holly Motheral (Paris, Ontario) each produced 8 kills for the match filling the void of Seldomridge tonight.  Sr. Robin Frost (Wheaton, IL) led the team with another double digit performance with 14 kills and Sr. Teresa Rose (Syracuse, N.Y.) added 3 blocks defensively from the frontline.

Defensively Jr. Stefanie Swanson (Houghton, N.Y) registered 25 digs for the game and

Sr. Elizabeth Gardner (New Castle, PA) kept the Highlander offense rolling with 38 assist’s for the match.

The Highlanders move to an 8-6 overall record with a 3-2 record in AMC North Division conference play. Their next game will be home in the Neilson Centre against Seton Hill on Friday 29th September at 7:00 pm.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
