Men 7th / Women 11th in Geneseo Invitational

Meet Overview:

The Houghton Cross Country program participated in the Geneseo Invitational on Saturday..  As has become the norm this season the day was cloudy and wet, heavy rains the week before the race created a muddy and soft course for the days races.  The Women’s race featured the Geneseo Knights the #1 ranked team in the NCAA Division III poll, and the 28th ranked Ohio Northern and powerhouse Canadian team Laurentian. The Men’s raced also featured the 4th Ranked Geneseo Knights,  and the 23rd ranked RIT Tigers.

The Men’s race also featured two top ranked teams, and the Houghton Men did not disappoint in their performance.  The men’s team ran aggressively from the start, using pack running to attempt a high finish is this large race..  .   The men were lead by Sophomore Dan Ballard (Syracuse, NY)  in 24th place in a time of 26:38, followed closely by Sophomore Chad Stauring (Arkport, NY) in time of 27:07  in 43rd place, he was followed by Freshmen Landry Jarvis (Canada)   who had a great race to finish who finished in 49th  place with a time of 27:20 (PR). Junior Mike Platt (Wayne, NJ) turned in a good performance to finish in 71st with a time of 27:48, captain Ryan Fadden (Highland Park, NY) rounded out the Highlander scoring in 72ndth place with a time of 27:50,  Jacob Connor followed Fadden to this finish in a time of 27:51.   The next pack of Houghton harriers was not far behind second year runner Aaron Williams, (Fulton, NY) in 97th place with a time of 28:31, he was followed by, Joe Campagna (Syracuse, NY) followed Williams across the line in 29:20 and  Senior Ryan Spear (Franklinville, NY) finished next in 30:09

The Men’s team finished the meet in 7th place out of 18 complete teams.  Running  a good race considering the conditions and the size of the race.

The women’s race went off next with the Houghton Women the last runners out on the rain soaked course adding to the sloppy conditions and the extra kilometer of racing. (The Women’s race was 6k versus the traditional 5k) The women were lead by 5th year senior Mary Gibson, (Grosse Pointe, MI) in 24:05 in 30th place, followed by first year runner Kaity Fadden (Highland Park, NY) in 24:23 for a 42nd place finish.  Both women ran excellent races given the conditions of the meet.  These women were followed by Junior Rachel Rhodes (Salamanca, NY)  in 25:40 (PR) for 77th place, next was Junior  Irene Vickner (Brockport, NY) finishing in 26:03 for 90th place. Irene ran a very courageous race and really suffered for the women’s team.  Followed by the main pack of Houghton Women , Lydia Throneblade (Castelton, VT) in 26:47 and first year runner Junior Heather Hutton (Canada) had a tough race finishing in 29:44

The women’s team finished the race in11th place out of 16 complete teams and has demonstrated great tenacity given their small size.

Coaches Corner:

Head Coach Bob Smalley

“For the second time this season the women's race followed the men's race.  Unfortunately, the later start had little impact on the chilly temperatures.  Besides the late start time the Houghton women were forced to run their first, and only 6 k, of the season.  The  cold and the extra 1000meters may have had an impact on their over-all performances.”

“ The teams both ran well especially given the hard workouts they have been doing”

Assistant Coach Matt Dougherty:

“Given the wet conditions there were some good performances, both the men’s and women’s teams are continually improving.”

“Some of our runners had really great performances for the Women Rachel Rhodes had another  breakout race, as well as first year runner Kaity Fadden. The men had some great performances including freshmen Landry Jarvis, and Dan Ballard.”

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
