Highlander Spirit Remains Strong despite Defeat, 1-0

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y. –  The Highlanders came out to a packed Burke Field crowd in celebration for the Homecoming weekend, but in the end lost 1-0 to the Milligan College Buffs.  The Highlanders played a tenacious defense versus the Buffs who were tough competition for the Highlanders today.

Although the Highlanders were unable to score, the highlight of the afternoon was the strong goaltending of So. Erik Lefebvre (Ottawa, ON) who faced 10 shots in total. The tough Highlander defense, challenged the Buffs to step up their play.  The only goal in the game came in the 18th minute on a direct kick by the Buffs in which, the ball was perfectly placed out of arms reach of So. Lefebvre (Ottawa, ON).

Highlanders Head Coach Matthew Webb, said “Our team is continuing to improve each game.  This was definitely a challenging team who came out and did just that but, our defense answered their challenge well.  The upcoming games for us are very important conference games.”

The Highlanders look to improve both their overall and American Mideast Conference record at home this Tuesday, October 10th versus neighbor and rival Daemen College with kickoff starting at 7:00PM on Burke Field.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
