                                             Invitational

Rochester, N.Y.-As has happened throughout the Fall 2006 Cross Country season weather played a huge role in the out-come of the day. However the Highlanders prevailed in their ever lasting preparation for the upcoming AMC Cross Country Championship with the Men finishing in 3rd and the Women in 5th out of nine teams today.

The Houghton Highlander women ran in sleeting wind driven rains and the 5k course was slick with mud and soft throughout. Sr. Mary Gibson (Grosse Pointe, MI) ran an aggressive race; taking a solid 3rd place in a time of 19:45; Fr. Kaitlin Fadden (Hyde Park, NY)  place 8th and Jr. Rachel Rhodes (Salamanca, NY) finished 25th with a personal best of 20:58. Houghton's women finished 5th out of 9 complete teams.

The sun came out for the men's 8k race, but the course was such a mess that the purple singlets were plastered brown with mud by race end. So. Dan Ballard (
Syracuse, NY) ran a fine 4th place, in 26:54; Jr. Chad Stauring (Arkport, NY )- 15th place, 27:51 was followed closely by Jr. Mike Platt (Wayne, NJ ), 16th- 27:53 in his best race of the year; So. Jacob Connor (Orchard Park, NY)- 17th- 27:53 and Fr. Landry Jarvis (St. Catherines, Ontario) 20th- 28:04.

Then men's team took 3rd out of 9 teams, finishing with 71 pts.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
