Kowalczyk Nets 4 goals in Win over Daemen 6-0

Box Score

Houghton, N.Y. It was once again a cold night for the Highlanders as they took the field tonight against the Daemen Wildcats in the NAIA qualifier match at Burke Field.  The temperature continued to drop throughout the game while the Highlanders play began to heat up.  Jr. Bethany Kowalczyk (Waterford, PA) led the Highlanders efforts scoring four goals and registering one assist on the night.

The Highlanders struck first in the 5th minute, as Sr. Bridget Toth (Victor, NY) found an open Jr. Bethany Kowalczyk (Waterford, PA) who put the ball past the Wildcat goalie.  The second goal came in the 10th minute from a double assist starting with Sr. Krista Fowlkes (Lake Placid, FL) who passed the ball to Jr. Rebecca Smith (Carlisle, PA) connecting with So. Mandy Lewandowski (North East, PA) who hammered the ball into the net. This assist gives Sr. Krista Fowlkes (Lake Placid, FL) 51 assists for her career breaking the school record.

The third Highlander goal came as a scramble in front of the Wildcat net allowed Jr. Sarah Whipple (Canandaigua, NY) to pull the goalie towards her and left an open Jr. Bethany Kowalczyk (Waterford, PA) who slid the ball into the net.

It only took the Highlanders 1:30 to find the back of the net in the second half as Jr. Bethany Kowalczyk (Waterford, PA) scored her 3rd goal of the game off an assist by Sr. Bridget Toth (Victor, NY).  In the 56th minute Jr. Bethany Kowalczyk (Waterford, PA) netted her 4th and final goal of the night unassisted.  The Highlanders closed out the scoring in the 58th minute as Jr. Bethany Kowalczyk (Waterford, PA) put the ball on the foot of Sr. Britany Crozier (Souderton, PA) who put the ball past the Wildcat goalie.

With today’s win, the lady Highlanders have earned their 14th consecutive Region Final Four appearance.

The Highlanders are host to the NAIA Region IX/X Final Four this weekend at Burke Field.  It is undetermined who the Highlanders will face yet.  The October 31st match up between Malone College of Ohio (11-6-2) versus Notre Dame College of Ohio (11-7-0) will decide who the Highlanders will play this Friday November 3rd.  The other NAIA Region IX/X Final Four game on Friday, November 3rd, is Tiffin University, OH (14-3-2) versus University of Maine Fort Kent (17-0-0).  The Championship game will be played on Saturday, November 4th with the time TBA for both the semi-final and championship game.

Houghton College has deep and solid roots in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where our teams use their commitment to excellence, both on the field-of-play and in the classroom, as a platform for their strong and unique

emphasis on Sports Ministry. Their goal is to make a difference for the Kingdom on campus, in Allegany County, in the Northeast and around the world.  Houghton is one of only 13 institutions who have been hand-selected by the NAIA to serve as "Champions of Character" Program Centers, opening the door for Houghton to be a leader, both in the Northeast and nationally, in character education. Through hands-on, innovative community outreach initiatives, Houghton coaches and student-athletes are working together to change the culture of sport and to change our culture through sport.
